What a privilege and blessing to come together in the house of the Lord and worship, pray, and minister to one another! This morning Pastor Josh led us in worship, while Rebecca Brewer blessed us with special music as she beautifully sang “Safe in My Arms.”
On this day set aside to honor our mothers, every mother in attendance received a gift. We also had drawings for a number of special prizes for mothers.
The text of Pastor Roger’s Mother’s Day message was from Exodus 20:12: “Honor your father and mother so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” As a part of this commandment, the parents are to likewise love their children and teach them the fear of the Lord and the ways of God.
Experience shows that mothers and grandmothers can and do play an important part in shaping the spiritual lives of their children. Pastor gave three examples of godly women in the Bible and the attributes they possessed. The first was the mother of Moses who demonstrated faith, and not fear, when Pharaoh gave an edict to kill all new-born boys by throwing them into the Nile. She did not obey the evil king’s edict when Moses was born, but had faith that God would handle the situation and protect him … and ultimately Moses was used by God to deliver Israel from bondage (Exodus 2 ff). The second example of a godly mother was Hannah who had prayed for a child for many years. Finally she vowed to the Lord that if He gave her a child, she would fully dedicate him to the Lord’s work. She fulfilled her vow when the Lord gave her a son, Samuel – and Samuel became a great prophet (I Samuel 1). The third example was Timothy’s grandmother Lois and mother Eunice who discipled him in the ways of the Lord as a child (2 Timothy 1:5). Timothy later became a faithful co-worker with the Apostle Paul in spreading the gospel!
